I just got home from a quick trip to the store and on the way there something odd happened that hopefully you guys can help me figure out. I was sitting at a light waiting to turn left with my music up pretty loud and windows half way down. I dunno if it was coincidence or what not but once I got the green light and as I started to turn left, I heard a loud pop/screeching sorta noise (can't really explain the noise too well) on my left side. I thought that perhaps it was the song that may have had a blip in it or something, then I smelt as if something was burning. The smell came seconds after I heard the noise. I couldn't make out if maybe if the noise and smell came from outside or inside. Then after, I heard the fan come on which I thought was a little weird because it usually doesn't turn on while i'm driving, usually only when i'm idling. So, I get to the store, pop the hood...and I couldn't see anything out of the ordinary, nor did I smell anything burnt.
Coming back to my car after I went and got what i needed from the store, I started it up and the maintenance light flashed a few times but didn't stay on. This is the first time i've ever seen that maintenance light turn on and i'm either at or approaching 10k miles. And i'm due for my second oil change as well. Anyone have a clue what the heck this could have been? Because i'm a little uneasy about it.

That service light will start blinking like 500 miles before due. As for what you smelled and whatever, I'd be worried. The "Great Smoke God" is a force to be reckoned with.

Check your belts and your fusebox.
Those would be the first things I'd check.
or it was some other car beside you?

or it was some other car beside you?Ya, that's what I was thinking as well but if I heard it on my left side, there wasn't a car to my left unless it was a car pulling out of a parking lot...i'd also have to smell that burnt smell that I did from 2 car lanes over while being on the move. This is bugging me...

I had my rear drivers side brake grind and catch when backing up. So much so I almost hit my fence. I rolled forward and then backed up again and have never had a problem since. This happend right after a spring install.

You said you had the music up pretty loud, and that it seemed to come from the speakers, correct?
It's very possible you blew a speaker. The pop was the voice coil either disconnecting from the cone, or the voice coil itself just went pop. This will also cause the burning smell, because of the heat caused by the overload.
This is only a suggestion, I would definitely check all your fuses, and wiring, and take it into the dealership for a look-over.
2 ways to test the blown speaker theory:
If you have subs, you'll want to disconnect them so you don't have to try to listen as hard.
Have both front doors open so you can go back and forth easily from each side to check the speakers.
Find the most bass heavy song you have and crank it (A bass testing CD is best) then get by the speakers, if you hear what sounds like sand paper being rubbed against something, your speaker is dead.
Find the most treble intensive song you have (A sine sweep works best) and get close to the tweeters. Listen for crackling. Tweeters can break too, and it'll be a very distinct noise.

Have you had anymore problems? If not, I'd chalk it up to another car. You said you heard a pop... if it was something on your car, mechanically, you would have probably felt it as well....

Whatever it was, whether your car or another car, the "Maint Req" light had nothing to do with it. Just reset that.
