Splitter, like Winn1414?
not sure how far i want it to stick out right now though. i'll be making two one is just gonna take a little longer to do. the other hoping to be 90% done this week. so if weather is good might see something close to done. need money for some paint will be the ending touch on it.

Splitters I've seen don't stick out quite that far. One like your's would be a real ankle biter

i'm still mocking its only cardboard right now. which is why it leaves me room to mess around. anyone have any idea how far it should come out?

Don't take this the wrong way Dext. But that reminds me of the time I had to bring a big cardboard box, folded up, to the dump in my old Corolla.
It wouldn't fit in the car so I strapped it to the trunk-mounted bike rack.
The Uber-Ghetto Wing got lots of laughs that day.
Almost as many as the day, after I remodeled the downstairs bathroom and arrived at the same dump with the crapper in the trunk. Told 'em it was my new camper conversion. :D
your making a picnic table?

Not knocking splitters but is there any information that splitters actually work and make a big enough difference?
Zillon

I'm not a huge fan...
And it shouldn't protrude anything over 3".

no. especially this long especially on front wheel drive cars :) its more or so for the show. A Lip kit on our cars can do more good than splitters.. not trying to diss on this project, just stating the facts.

on our cars, aspecially being so light, any downforce IS downforce. Plain and simple, you need it (if you do any extreme racing/ high speed driving).
heres a direct quote from the APR site (for those of you who dont know, they are the leader, hands down in aerodynamics for sport compacts)
www.APRPerformance.com
"Front Aerodynamic Components
Lip spoilers, diffusers, splitters, and canards are all components that can be utilized to product downforce in front of the vehicle. These components are especially useful to the following vehicles.
Front-Engine/Front-Wheel Drive (FF):
Power output from FF cars obviously comes from the front of the vehicle. At high speeds, vehicles tend to lift. This lifting effect reduces traction. To prevent the loss of traction, FF cars can utilize components such as front splitters and front canards to give more downforce to the front of the vehicle allowing more power delivery to the ground from the engine."
...dext, def dont have it show more than a few inches. I would say no more than 2" to get maximum functionality in conjunction w/ your splitters.

ok yeah its gonna be fully adjustable when done i'm gonna work on the template more today this is why its only cardboard to start with the finished will be a wood with fiberglass resin then later i can hopefully paint it black.
simmo
05-10-2007, 07:59 AM
once again though.. are you gonna race in it? I just dont think our cars have enough power/speed to get to the point where the wheels will lift and lose tracion.. imo

the front end lifts as is on take off from torque my figuring is to get the maxium function it would be over the 100mph mark otherwise. im not get the fullest function from it but think of it this way anytime you move air your still creating some kind of force regardless.
i'm getting setup to do auto-x once i have the money to see how these things really can do. right now i have to build to the sts class which is where my car falls now. still lacking some stuff that they do allow.

not bad for starting out with cardboard huh plus using only hand tools. still gotta seal it and drill some stuff out. make sure it fits right then paint it hopefully.

i'd take pics but the camera batties are dead i'm thinking what i have coming out from the front is fine gotta trim alot more on my corners is all and do a little fit underneath. its pretty minor so still could be on by the end of the week if weather holds out otherwise hope i can still use the garage fine.

Looks pretty kool. Can take out afew Gofers with it, lol. U gonna put those adjustable struts on it like the GT cars run?

dont worry what people are saying.
to be honest who cares if it functions if you like it.
whats the point of people painting thier engine covers if thats how we are playing.
my only request is you dont use wood... go buy some lucite or any plastic instead. it is lighter, looks better, wont rott, and you wont have to use pledge when you clean your car.

^thats his template, hes making it out of glass.
...simmo, just wanted to throw this interesting fact out there from the same site:
One example of how much lift can be generated on a car is the lift on a stock 2000 Volkswagen Beetle. A stock Beetle can produce 742 lbs of lift at 124 mph! Since a Beetle weights roughly 2700 lbs, nearly 25% of a Beetle’s weight is actually lifting at that speed. Imagine building a high powered Beetle race car. You think with 25% less ground traction at 124 mph to the ground will be beneficial to a faster time on a straight away?
...just goes to show you, even though our cars dont make a ton of power, lift is inevitable regardless.
personally im not a big fan of splitters either, but to each there own. just figured i would throw some more fact into the abyss.

actualy his templet is cardboard and he stated hes making it out of wood and painting that from what i read.

Good for you for making your own parts. I wish I had the skills and patience to do something like that.
dexter_5000
05-11-2007, 12:07 AM
when i'm done you won't know what its made of the sketal part will be wood. yes but its a hardboard. more like false wall kind of stuff. once its sealed no real maintance required just will have to paint it. the cost is much cheaper still.

hmm...i missed that part. def. not a big fan of that idea, but we will see what it looks like when done.

05-11-2007, 07:18 AM
from the numbers that Brandon put (742lbs of lift @ 124mph) wont that snap your cardboard?

LOL...
im sorry, but that was funny.
simmo
05-11-2007, 09:00 AM
no but seriously im not trying to sound like a d**k. plastic/fiberglass flexes, the more downforce you put on it, part of it gets absorbed by the plastic and part of it flexes the plastic(fiberglass) - sorry for stupid explanation im trying to put it in simple words. But cardboard would just snap IMO.

Dex, you given any thought to using lexan?
It's easy to obtain, and you can get any thickness you want.
dexter_5000
05-11-2007, 09:35 AM
i tried plexi glass and that failed horribly i need to get in touch with a place that does fire truck tanks. see if they have anything i can use.
Zillon
05-11-2007, 09:55 AM
Plexiglass is too brittle and cracks far too easily.
Lexan is WAY more durable. Plus, you can get it smoked, so forget painting.

i called about a sheet of abs plastic will be $55.66 plus whatever shipping is. so for now this is my full size test template anyway. still needs more modifying to make it fit even imo. what i have so far isn't bad either painted it flat black. fiberglass resin is on one side now too have to wait for that to setup before i can sand anything. need to paint the other side still and resin that as well. weather was a little rainy this morning so have to hope for the sun tommorow. need to get some extra hardware still too. just fasteners and lock nuts.

its on i'll try to get a pic today i'm still in the works of fine tuning it some need to trim down the corners still again. gonna take some time its a work in progress. its not something for everyone but this does lay out quite a bit of ground work overall.

good suggestion farther apart and at an angle... i have seen many before and it looks cool. as you said dex you still got some tweeken to do ... i think it is a great plan just not sitting right in my opinion... usually with one of those your canards are going to be higher up... i think its to close at this point in time but its looken great bro!!:h5: keep up the kick ass work
